THE HISTORY OF BATMAN

Located within the cultural and geographical landscape of Upper Mesopotamia, Batman and its surrounding region have been influenced by numerous civilisations throughout history. Owing to its strategic position near important trade routes and river valleys, the area came under the rule or influence of the Assyrians, Medes, Persians, Romans, Byzantines and several Islamic states.

Hasankeyf, one of the oldest and most significant settlements in the region, forms the historical heart of Batman. With a history extending back thousands of years, Hasankeyf bears the traces of many civilisations through its cave dwellings, rock-cut structures, castle, bridge remains, religious monuments and traditional settlements.

The Ancient World and Early Settlements

The lands surrounding modern-day Batman have been inhabited since ancient times and formed part of the wider Mesopotamian cultural sphere.

Throughout history, the region was influenced or governed by major powers including the Assyrians, Medes, Persians, Romans and Byzantines. Its location between Anatolia and Mesopotamia made it an important passageway for military campaigns, trade networks and cultural exchange.

Hasankeyf emerged as one of the region’s most important settlements. Built along the banks of the Tigris River, it developed around a naturally protected rocky landscape. Its caves, fortifications, bridge ruins and monumental structures provide evidence of a long and continuous history of settlement.

The Islamic Period

The region came under Islamic rule from the 7th century onwards, following the expansion of Muslim armies into Upper Mesopotamia.

Over the centuries, the area was governed by several Islamic dynasties and states, including the Umayyads, Abbasids, Hamdanids, Artuqids and Ayyubids.

Hasankeyf experienced one of its most prosperous periods under Artuqid rule. During this era, the city developed into an important centre of administration, education, craftsmanship and commerce. Mosques, madrasas, bridges, palaces and other public structures contributed to its architectural and cultural character.

The city continued to maintain its regional importance during the Ayyubid period, when additional religious and civic monuments were constructed.

The Ottoman Period

Batman and its surrounding territory became part of the Ottoman Empire in the early 16th century.

During the Ottoman period, the region was administered through various provinces, districts and local administrative centres connected to Diyarbakır, Bitlis and Siirt. Hasankeyf retained its historical importance for a period, while smaller rural settlements continued to develop through agriculture, animal husbandry and regional trade.

For many years, the area that would later become the modern city of Batman remained administratively connected to neighbouring centres, particularly Siirt.

The Republican and Oil Era

The transformation of Batman into a modern city began during the Republican era, particularly with the discovery and commercial extraction of petroleum.

Oil exploration intensified in the region during the 1940s. The discovery of commercially viable oil at Raman Mountain marked a turning point in Batman’s history and played a major role in Türkiye’s developing energy industry.

The establishment of oil-production facilities and the Batman Refinery during the 1950s accelerated population growth, employment and urban development. Roads, housing, industrial facilities and public services were expanded to meet the needs of the emerging workforce.

As a result, what had previously been a relatively small settlement rapidly developed into one of southeastern Türkiye’s most important industrial and energy centres.

The Formation of Batman Province

Batman became a district in the Republican period and continued to grow rapidly as a result of industrialisation, migration and investment in the petroleum sector.

On 16 May 1990, Batman was separated from Siirt and officially granted provincial status. Several surrounding districts and settlements were subsequently incorporated into the newly established province.

Today, Batman is one of the major urban and industrial centres of Türkiye’s Southeastern Anatolia Region. The city combines its modern identity as a centre of energy and industry with the ancient cultural heritage represented by Hasankeyf and the wider Mesopotamian landscape.

From prehistoric settlements and ancient kingdoms to medieval centres of learning and the modern petroleum industry, Batman carries the traces of a long and diverse history into the present day.
